1. A few names of chemicals necessary for hydrofracking to commence are as follows:
-Hydrochloric Acid is used to dissolve mineral obstructions in the soil, and help drill into rocks that take more effort than just simple machinery.
-Guar Gum helps to thicken water-sand solutions.
-Citric Acid prevents the precipitation of metal oxides.
-Ethaniol is used as a surfactant, which reduces the surface tension of a liquid.
2. Many of these chemicals listed above are so obscure that they are kept secret from the general public. However, most of them can be detected via careless drilling operations could be found contaminating the water supply and local soil beds, as well as in local sewage systems from drainage.
3. According to several sources and data logs, including Propublica, SourceWatch and Environment America, there have been over 1000 confirmed cases of methane well contamination from hydrofracking in a combination of certain states such as Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Mexico, Alabama, and Ohio. This means that nationwide, the methane wells that have been contaminated range in at least the thousands.
4. I would not be comfortable with having that sort of Hydrofracking process occur anywhere near my property. First of all, I live in a cul-de-sac area of a suburban neighborhood. If any sort of drilling were to occur near my area, it would destroy any sort of natural environment near my area, and furthermore, the chemicals that are used to hydrofrack would run the risk of draining into the pipes of the nearby houses and causing contamination in the water supply. The same water that we use to drink would essentially be poisoned. Not too many people would be comfortable with letting total strangers into their neighborhood and drilling into their backyards.
